Veterans Benefits & Resources
Driver's License designation
Honorably-discharged veterans may have a Veteran designation placed on their driver license. Present your evidence of honorable discharge at any DMV office.
If you are obtaining the designation only, the fee is $8.25 for a non-commercial license or ID card or $12.25 for a commercial license. There is no additional fee to add the designation if you are renewing your license or completing another license transaction. If you are mailing a license renewal, you may mail a copy of the discharge document.
Visit archives.gov to obtain a copy of your DD-214 or other evidence of honorable discharge.
Tax Exemptions
Nevada grants tax exemptions for many veterans. You must present your DD-214 or other discharge papers and any proof of service-connected disability at your local County Assessor office.
The exemption may be applied to the Governmental Services Tax portion of your vehicle registration or to your property taxes.
The Assessor will determine the amount of the exemption and issue an exemption number you may submit when you register your vehicle or renew. The exemption cannot be applied after the registration or renewal is completed.
Veterans with certain dates of service and medal recipients are eligible. Disabled veterans are eligible for an exemption based on the percentage of disability. The Clark County Assessor has a good explanation of the exemptions and forms for Clark County residents.
Veterans can designate part or all of their exemption to be used for support of Nevada Veterans Homes. They may also transfer the exemption to their spouse. See the following forms:
- Designation of Use for Veterans Exemption (VP 187)
Used to designate that a portion of a Veterans Exemption be directed to the Nevada Veterans Home Account. - Affidavit for Transfer of Exemption to Spouse (VP 259)
Used to transfer a Veterans Exemption to the veteran's spouse. - Trust Affidavit for Exemptions (VP 242)
To enable the use of a Veterans or other exemption when the vehicle is titled to a trust.
Active Duty military members are entitled to the following exemptions:
- Active Duty Military Combat Affidavit (VP 258)
To claim an exemption from registration late fees. - Non-Resident, Active Duty Military Governmental Services Tax Exemption Affidavit (VP 203)
For active duty military members who are residents of another state and stationed in Nevada. See Military Licensing. - Non-Resident Military Spouse Governmental Services Tax Exemption Affidavit (VP 203s)
