Who is Eligible for Online Rapid Registration
You are eligible for online registration if you meet the following criteria:
Purchased from an Out-of-State Dealer
You will need to provide the purchase or sales agreement.
Private Party or Gifted Vehicle
You will need to provide the purchase or sales agreement.
Private Party Purchase with Lien Holder
The title must be in the new owner’s name. If it isn’t, you will need to transfer the title and register the vehicle in-person at a DMV office.
New Nevada Resident
You may either use your valid out-of-state registration or a title in your name.
Choose Your Registration Option
Buying from a Nevada Dealer
Vehicles purchased from a Nevada dealer are eligible for online registration. The dealership will provide you with an Electronic Dealer Report of Sale (EDRS) number, which acts like a ticket number to register your vehicle Online or through MyDMV .
What You’ll Need for Online Registration
- EDRS (Electronic Dealer, Rebuilder, or Lessor’s Report of Sale or Lease)
- Nevada Evidence of Insurance Card
- Current Odometer Reading
- Current Registration (if transferring plates)
- Tax Exemption Number (if applicable)
- A printer to print your movement permit and receipt
In Person Registration
Even with an EDRS, you must visit a DMV office in person if:
- You are registering the vehicle in the name of a trust.
- You want specialty or personalized plates (though you can sometimes swap these later online).
- You are a new resident and haven’t swapped your out-of-state driver’s license yet.
- The vehicle is a moped, motor home, or trailer.
Bringing a Vehicle from Out-of-State
Out-of-state vehicle dealers must comply with their own state’s laws regarding sales to non-residents. Ask about a movement permit and for details on how the vehicle will be titled before you buy. Vehicles purchased from a private party may be eligible for our new online registration process, Rapid Registration .
Required Documents
Invoice or Bill of Sale, and (one of the following):
- Title
- Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin
- Lease Agreement
- Purchase Order
- Odometer Disclosure Statement, if needed
Nevada-Specific Documents
- Nevada Evidence of Insurance
- Nevada Emissions Vehicle Inspection Report (if needed)
- Current Odometer Reading
- Vehicle Inspection Certificate (Form VP 015)
- Tax Exemption Number or Forms, if any
- Current Registration (if transferring plates)
- License Plates from your current vehicle (if surrendering for fee credit)
- License Plate Forms (for new personalized or specialty plates)
Insurance Requirement
- Out-of-state insurance is NOT accepted
- Insurance must be from a Nevada-licensed carrier
- The effective date must be equal to or before the registration date
- Names on insurance must match the registration and title exactly
Important: You must obtain liability insurance from a Nevada-licensed carrier in the exact name(s) which will be on the registration and title.
Tax Exemptions: You must apply any tax exemption at the time of registration. We do not issue refunds or apply exemptions retroactively.
Buying from a Private Party
Vehicles purchased from a private party may be eligible for our new online registration process. Register your vehicle entirely online with Rapid Registration .
Beware of Scams
Many "too good to be true," limited-time, or cash-only deals posted to social media are often scams to sell vehicles that have been stolen or had their VINs switched or odometers tampered with.
Protect Yourself - Make Sure To:
- Obtain a photo of the seller’s ID
- Get the seller’s contact information
- Never interact with a third party who is not the seller you contacted
- Meet at a DMV VIN inspection station to have the VIN checked
- Utilize VIN history tools if in-person inspection isn't possible
- Accept no excuses if the seller doesn't have the vehicle's title. Walk away.
Vehicle Title Required: Sellers must provide a vehicle title. A Bill of Sale by itself is not acceptable.
How to Register
Required Documents:
- Vehicle Title, or a security agreement from a financial institution
- Nevada Evidence of Insurance
- Nevada Emissions Vehicle Inspection Report if needed
- Current Odometer Reading (motorcycles, mopeds and RVs are exempt)
- Vehicle Inspection Certificate (VP 015) if never registered/titled in Nevada
- Tax Exemption Number or Forms, if any
- Current Registration, if transferring plates
- License Plate Forms for new personalized or specialty plates

Buying & Selling Laws
Laws You Should Know
- Selling a vehicle on an empty lot is illegal in most cases
- You may not sell more than 3 personally-owned vehicles per year without a Dealer's License
- Subleasing or “take over payments” deals are illegal. Any loan or lien must be satisfied before it can be sold.

Salvage Vehicles
must be rebuilt, inspected, and titled as Rebuilt before
resale
(Vehicles with orange salvage titles cannot be sold or registered in Nevada until repaired and inspected)
License Plate Transfers & Returns
Nevada law requires sellers to keep their plates. See Registration Cancellation
- Special/Standard Plates: Turn in or reuse within 18 months.
- Discontinued Special Plates: Turn in or reuse within 30 days.

If you're transferring plates to the buyer, this form must be completed. Registration fee credits do not transfer to the buyer. -
Lost, Stolen, Mutilated or Surrendered License Plate

Title Requirements
Sellers must provide a properly signed-off title to the buyer in private party sales, family sales or gifts. Any loan or other lien must be satisfied first.
Title Signatures:
- If title says "Person 1 AND Person 2" Both parties must sign it
- If title says "Person 1 OR Person 2" Either party can sign without the other
If the title is missing:
- Apply for a duplicate title from the state where it was last titled. See 50 State DMV Links
Exception: If the vehicle was:
- Last titled in Nevada
- Model year 2010 or older
Title & Odometer Requirement: Vehicles 2011 and newer require a valid title and odometer reading. See Titles for more information.
Insurance and Movement Permits
Liability Insurance is Required
You must have Liability Insurance from a Nevada-licensed carrier before driving any vehicle on public roads. Make sure to obtain insurance before taking delivery of the vehicle.
License Plates
The seller should keep their license plates. Surrender the Plates , or use them on another vehicle.
The “3-Day Drive-Away” Rule
You may drive the vehicle without a movement permit for up to three days after the purchase date if:
- Proof of Ownership: The signed-over title or a formal Bill of Sale
- Nevada Insurance: An active Nevada liability policy (digital or paper card)
- Direct Route: You should be driving the vehicle for the purpose of getting it home or to the DMV.
Movement Permit
You must have a permit to drive the vehicle more than three days after purchase.
Online Movement Permit (Recommended)
- You can obtain a 30-day permit online in the MyDMV portal for $1.00
- Proof of ownership
- Proof of insurance
In Person Movement Permit
- You can walk in to any DMV office without an appointment
- Proof of ownership
- If possible, all documents needed to register the vehicle
