Order online or by mail/fax if your vehicle is registered in Nevada, or if you’re moving or buying a vehicle soon.
Order Online? You must have a Nevada driver’s license or ID card to order online. Personalized plates must be approved by DMV staff. Please allow up to 10 to 12 weeks for delivery. You must pick up the plates within 60 days after they arrive at the office. Make an Appointment as soon as you order the plates.
Tips for Choosing Your Personalized Plate
- Choose a combination that is available, not offensive, and does not conflict with Nevada plate numbering.
- Punctuation and special symbols are not allowed; character limits are shown on each plate’s application.
- Plates require DMV approval and manufacturing; allow 10–12 weeks for delivery.
- If rejected, you’ll be notified by letter.

Mail or Fax Order
- Check your plate choice Online before ordering.
- Download and complete the Application below, mail with fees (check, money order, or Payment Authorization Form ADM 205) to the address on the form.
- You can order plates even if moving to Nevada within 30 days without current registration.
- Plates will be mailed to your chosen DMV office for pickup.

In-Person Order
- Order custom plates in person when registering or renewing at a DMV or County Assessor’s office.
- Use the Online Personalized Plate Search to choose style and numbering before visiting.
- Complete the appropriate application form before visiting.
- Receive a temporary movement permit; plates will be mailed to you.
Order as a Gift
- Plates cannot be released unless registered to a vehicle.
- Order by mail or fax, placing your name and address on the application and the recipient’s name on the line labeled “Name of person plate will be registered to if other than applicant.”
- DMV or County Assessor will notify you by mail when plates arrive; they will hold plates for 60 days.
- Registration must be completed in person at a DMV or Assessor office.
Important: We cannot release license plates which are not registered to a vehicle.
Getting Your Plates
One DMV office visit is required to receive personalized plates, regardless of the ordering method.

If you already have a registered car and just want to change the look of your plates:
- What to bring: Your old metal plates.
- Where to go: Any DMV or County Assessor office that handles registration.
- Fees: You’ll pay the specialty plate fee plus a $5 substitute plate fee
Important Timing:
- Renewal NOT due: No emissions test or renewal is needed.
- Renewal due (within 35 days): You must renew for the year and complete a smog check (if required).
- Early Renewal: If you choose to renew early, your expiration date will change, but you will receive credit for any unused time on your old registration.

If you want to move your favorite plates from one of your cars to another:
- Requirements: You must renew the registrations for a full year for both vehicles.
- Documentation: Bring your insurance cards, current odometer readings, and emissions inspections (if required).

Want to let someone else use your plate number?
- The Form: You must sign a License Plate Release (SP 67) .
- The Process: This happens at the DMV while the new owner is registering the vehicle or during a formal plate swap.

Plate Number Complaints
If you see a personalized plate number that you find offensive, you may ask the DMV to review and possibly recall it. Please complete the License Plate Complaint Form (SP 74) and mail it to the address listed.
The DMV will consider recalling any personalized license plate that:
- Expresses contempt, ridicule, or superiority of race, ethnic heritage, religion or gender
- Contains any connotation that is sexual, vulgar, derogatory, profane, or obscene
- Contains a direct or indirect reference to a drug or drug paraphernalia, or a gang
- Makes a defamatory reference to a person or group
