Step 3: Driver Education

Most first-time drivers under 18 in Nevada must complete a driver education course. You can enroll as early as age 15½, and you’ll need to complete the course after passing the written test.

Note: Home-schooled students are not exempt from this requirement.

Where to Take the Course

  • Courses may be taken through a public or private high school or a DMV- licensed professional driving school.
  • Some private schools offer a 15-hour classroom + 5-hour behind-the-wheel option (must be DMV-approved)

Completion & Documentation

  • Professional schools issue a Certificate of Completion, which must be presented when applying for your full license.
  • High schools may issue a certificate, report card, or transcript as proof.
Driver education is required to obtain a full driver license.
Driver education is not required to get an instruction permit.

Motorcycle

If a driver education course is not available within 30 miles of your home and you do not wish to take an online course, you must complete:

Logging Your Supervised Driving Hours

Practical driving experience is essential for becoming a safe and confident driver. Nevada requires supervised practice to ensure you develop the necessary skills.

Logging Your Hours
  • Keep a written log of all driving practice, ensuring you include the date, time, and duration of each session.
  • Submit the log when you take your driving skills test.
Time spent with a professional driving instructor counts toward your required hours.
Document Requirements:
  • You must use either the RoadReady app or the DLD-130 form.
  • Other logs will not be accepted.
You must still have your parent/guardian sign the first page of the DLD-130 form, even if you use the app.
