About Us

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, founded in 1957, has more than 1,200 employees, processes approximately 10 million transactions a year, and collects $1.6 billion in annual revenue.

What We Do

Our job is to license Nevada's 2.3 million drivers and ID card holders and register more than 2.7 million vehicles while maintaining the integrity and privacy of DMV records. However, the DMV is also responsible for:

  • Helping to ensure highway safety through driver education and testing
  • Administering financial responsibility laws
  • Licensing and regulation of the motor vehicle industry, including: dealers, salespeople, rental car companies, manufacturers, and emissions inspection stations
  • Licensing and regulation of private driving schools and instructors
  • Investigation of consumer complaints
  • Investigation of identity theft and vehicle fraud, including criminal arrests and prosecution
  • Collection of all Nevada fuel taxes (including aviation fuel!)
  • Collection of Governmental Services Taxes to help fund local governments and schools
