Important: All 50 states share information through the Problem Driver Pointer System and the Commercial Driver License Information System.

How Suspensions Work

Key Facts:

  • A suspension, revocation, or "withdrawal" must be cleared by the state which originated it
  • A withdrawal will remain on your record indefinitely until it is cleared

Required by insurance or lenders

Registration Fee Refunds

Information about eligibility for refunds of unused registration fee

Important Policy: Former residents are NOT eligible for a refund of unused registration fees.

No Refunds for Former Residents

If you have moved out of state, you are not eligible to receive a refund for any unused portion of your vehicle registration fees.

This applies even if:

  • You registered for a full year
  • You moved shortly after registration
  • You surrendered your plates properly
  • You notified the DMV promptly

Limited Refund Circumstances

Refunds are issued only in very limited circumstances as outlined under the License Plate Surrender & Fee Refunds policy.

Examples of qualifying circumstances:

  • A case worker will review your specific situation and provide guidance on the steps needed to resolve your suspension or revocation.
  • Duplicate registration fee paid in error
  • Other specific administrative errors

Moving out of state does not qualify for these limited refund circumstances.

Why This Policy Exists

Vehicle registration fees in Nevada cover the entire registration period. When you register a vehicle, you are paying for the right to operate that vehicle in Nevada for the full term, regardless of whether you use it for the entire period.

Planning Tip: If you know you will be moving out of state soon, consider using short-term movement permits instead of registering for a full year. See the Permits tab for more information about 10-day and 30-day options.
