RENO – The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), in partnership with the Nevada Department of Administration, celebrated the ground breaking for the new Northern Nevada DMV Services Center Wednesday.
“It’s no secret that the Reno-Sparks community has grown exponentially since the opening of the Galletti Way DMV Office,” Governor Brian Sandoval said. “Once complete, this one-stop service facility will dramatically improve the customer experience. With more parking – for both customers and employees – as well as more service windows, we are aiming to reduce wait times and make visits to the Reno DMV as painless as possible.”
The site for the new facility is located near the corners of Sandhill Road and Double Diamond Parkway, off the South Meadows exit. The new building, once opened, will replace the two existing DMV offices currently in Reno; the main office on Galletti Way and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) location on Greg Street.
The design for the new building is similar to the Sahara DMV location in Las Vegas, which opened in December 2016.
"We believe the Reno community will greatly appreciate the functionality and efficiency this new building will bring to the DMV experience,” said Ward Patrick, State Public Works Division Administrator. “Using the new DMV building in Las Vegas as a model for success, H+K Architects and CORE Construction will create a building designed with the goal of optimum customer service in mind.”
Currently, the DMV operates mainly from the Galletti Way location and has since 1979. Despite the long occupancy, however, that building is actually leased from the Nevada Department of Transportation. (NDOT) The DMV also has a CDL facility in Sparks, serving only those customers, often creating confusion for Nevadans. The new facility will alleviate that issue by combining both of these locations into a streamlined service center, featuring more parking than both current sites combined. Parking has long been an issue at the main Reno location, with barely enough parking spaces to cover all of the 150+ staff that work in that building. The new DMV center would feature somewhere between 450 and 500 parking spaces, an exponential and necessary increase.
The new DMV location has over 54,000 square feet of space, which will include an entirely new Emissions Lab, and a full service CDL facility. The state of the art facility will also feature something particularly exciting, as it is the first of its kind in the nation: a Drive Up Express DMV Kiosk.
DMV Director Terri L. Albertson noted at the event, “For us at the DMV, this isn’t merely a building. It is a symbol of all that we need: a way to better serve our community, and the people of this great state, through dedication, modernization, and vision. This kiosk will work just like it sounds, helping keep our customers on-the-go by providing another service to better meet the evolving needs of Nevadans.”
The building is anticipated to open after Nevada Day weekend 2020.
